(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- More than 400,000 people are living with Down syndrome in the U.S. One in 88 children has autism. One in five children will be diagnosed with a mental illness. Many of these children find it difficult to make friends and make their way in life. Now, a music legend is helping these kids find their voice and find out just how special they really are.

Bernadette Bascom is all love. She loves kids, and she loves her music. The R&B legend has shared the stage with Elton John and Stevie Wonder.

“It’s turned me into a woman who really respects the power of music,” Bernadette told Ivanhoe.

Now, Bernadette is combining both her passions to form The Music Project. She calls them differently-abled and teaches them how to sing.

“Open your jaws, short words and breathe,” Melissa Sprague, from The Music Project, told Ivanhoe.

“Use your core if you want to sing something,” Stephanie Routh, from The Music Project, told Ivanhoe.

“I’ve learned to open my voice more,” Jay Trippett, from the The Music Project, told Ivanhoe.

Bernadette teaches them how to love themselves.

“They’ve never held a microphone before, never had anyone applaud them for anything. That’s big,” Bernadette told Ivanhoe.

“It’s wonderful to see another mentor come in and show they are capable of doing some pretty powerful things,” Cole Caplan, from The Music Project, told Ivanhoe.

“Her confidence has spiraled way up,” Judy Paulozzo, a mom, told Ivanhoe.

Bernadette has taken her show on the road, helping troubled teens find their way through song. She now hopes to take the music show to the national level, helping teenagers across the country.  She’s also working on a reality TV show, spotlighting kids who aren’t perfect in Hollywood’s eyes but are perfect to her.
